Gaithersburg, Maryland was a small agricultural settlement in 1765 and was part of a land grant of “Deer Park” owned by Ralph Crabb in 1725. Part of this grant was sold off to Henry Brookes, and he built his home 'Montpelier' there in the late 1780s or early 1790s. Benjamin Gaither was his son-in-law, who inherited a portion and by 1850 the town offically became known as Gaithersburg.
With the coming of the B&O Railroad came rapid growth, and on April 5, 1878 the town was officially incorporated as the City of Gaithersburg.
